Following the disappointing loss to Cambridge the weekend before, the Oxford University Blues rebounded strongly with an 8-0 victory over UCL in their first home game of the season. Before a crowd of 100 fellow students (not bad 11pm on a Saturday!), the University Blues scoring parade was led by returning player Jack Woods who had a hat trick and an assist for 4 points in the game. Woods was also the Man of the Match, hoisting the coveted case of beer about his head at centre ice after the game.
The UCL team showed up ready to play in the 1st period, putting up a tough defence right away. The Swedish UCL goalie, Gabriel Sjöström, stopped 54 shots in the game. UCL also battled through 6 consecutive penalties in the first period, which undoubtedly left their defence tired for the second period. The Blues took the lead in the first period with a goal by Alex Bergin at 10:25 with the assist going to line-mate Woods.
The Blues’ offensive kicked-in during the 2nd period, with 5 goals in less than 10-minutes. Nick Anstett seemingly scored a skillful goal 6:58 of the 2nd, following a offensive zone face-off that turned out to be a strange bounce off the defenders stick into the back of the net. Pouncing on the seized momentum, Oxford followed with two quick goals from Woods who teamed up with Sean Molloy on both. St. Hugh’s student Sean Walsh quickly added to the scoring by burying Somerville’s Connor Roth’s rebound with the secondary assist going to fellow MBA student Mark Smith. Bergin then closed off the 2nd period flood with his second of the game at 15:02 assisted by Julian NoiseCat.
UCL didn’t roll-over though, continuing to battle through the closing frame. Elliot Akama-Garren scored a beautiful goal on a one-timer from the point at 7:42 of the 3rd period. Woods completed the hat-trick on a pass from Walsh at 14:40 to end the scoring with an exciting short-handed goal.
The Oxford University Blues’ cohort of MBA students continued to lead the team in penalty minutes, with Jamie Huckabay, David Tedone and Nick Anstett combing for 10 minutes total. The UCL team had trouble staying out of the sin bin as well, combining for 18-minutes of penalties. Connor Lyons was ready for UCL’s offensive bursts, stopping 12 shots in the game. Overall, a solid improvement from the Blues and a workman like effort from UCL in their first game of the season.
