Why Join OUIHC?

As Oxford University’s Ice Hockey Club, we provide a hockey community of academics that ensures competitive hockey in the top University leagues during your time at Oxford. The club provides a unique opportunity for students to add Blues to their list of Oxford accomplishments and join a distinguished list of Oxford hockey alumni that include former NHL President and Honorary Chairman Clarence Campbell and former Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson. Likewise, the club allows players to reconnect with the sport that they may have grown up playing and may have otherwise thought they would never play competitively again.

  • Compete in the top University league
  • Tour with the Team
  • Be part of Oxford’s hockey legacy and earn the Oxford Blue
  • Represent the Historic Institution of Oxford in the Age-long Tradition of the Varsity Match against Cambridge University.

‘He loved the game… we all did — and that’s why it survived’

— Colin Brezicki, OUIHC Captain ’71 (talking about that year’s goalie — a South African cricket wicket-keeper who had to be strapped to the posts to prevent him from falling over).

Important Information for New Players

Oxford Hockey Nomenclature

Here are the facts concerning the nomenclature in relation to men’s ice hockey at Oxford University and we hope they prove helpful. Oxford University Ice Hockey Club (OUIHC) is the ice hockey club that officially represents Oxford University. The men’s contingent of the club consists of two teams:

  • Men’s first team – Oxford University Blues
  • Men’s second team – Oxford Vikings

The Oxford Ice Hockey Trust is an independent, private organisation run by a board of Trustees. This organisation has no formal affiliation to Oxford University or the OUIHC. The Oxford Ice Hockey Trust runs two Men’s teams:

  • The Oxford Blues
  • The Oxford Canadians

Prospective players who wish to play for the Oxford University team and compete at the highest University level should contact the OUIHC.

Traveling to Oxford with Kit

Thinking of playing hockey in Oxford? Then you’ll need to get your kit (hockey equipment) here somehow. This may seem like a daunting task; however it can be as simple as checking in an extra piece of luggage when you travel. For example, if you are traveling from Toronto, Canada with Air Canada in economy class, you can add a second checked bag for $100. This may seem like a lot, but it is by far the most simple and direct way of shipping your kit. You can bring your sticks in a separate bag as well. Furthermore, $100 is cheaper than any equipment you would be able to purchase in the UK, so make sure you stock up on the essentials: stick tape, sock tape, extra sticks…
Follow this link for the extra baggage charges for some of the common airlines flying from North America. Make sure you double check these fees before committing to your ticket.
